However, I was mistaken, but only a couple times. One of those times was when I was about seven. My brother, sister, and I flew to Chicago to visit with my dad, for more than two days. I thought this was going to be the best thing ever. It wasn’t the best thing, but it sure was nice to spend time with my dad. Spending time with my dad was probably good for us during the first several years of the divorce. I honestly thought my dad had a really cool house, which was one of the reasons I enjoyed that vacation. After another move to Dallas, we got to visit that house. It was a hot summer week, but it was a week I’ll never forget. My dad made his homemade chicken, gravy, and rice. His cooking is ou t of this world, but of course I was more excited to just see my dad. All things changed when my brother and I went to stay with him for a month after Hurricane Katrina. That was the longest amount of time I spent with him since I was four. My brother and I stayed in my step-brothers room in the basement. Don’t get me wrong, there were two huge rooms down there, but having a box as a dresser just wasn’t working for us. We also slept on air mattresses and a couch, we switched every day. I went to school for two weeks, and it was the worst thing ever, besides not seeing my dad. It was great to visit with him though. My brother, dad, and I all went outside on breezy days and just laughed at old memories we had together. Saying good-bye when he brought us back home wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. It was the last time I knew I’d see him for quite some time. Moving from state to state was nothing new with my dad. After the next three moves, I really g ave up all hope with my dad. Our weekly phone calls became monthly phone calls. Nothing was new when we didn’t hear from him for a few months. As months went on, the years went on, still no shows when he came to town. My dad coming to my own city and not even paying us a visit just blew my mind. How could a dad do such a thing to his own children? I am now seventeen years old, and I can honestly say I don’t get my hopes up anymore. It has been a long thirteen years with out my dad. However, not seeing him but once a year definitely has a big role in how I feel about the situation. I get a phone call on my birthday and maybe Christmas, and those calls aren’t too long, because we have nothing to talk about. It really is sad that we have nothing to talk about, but it is the truth. I will never forget what my dad has done to me. Viviparous Etymology The word viviparous stems from the  Latin word vivus, meaning alive and parere, meaning to bring forth. The Latin word for viviparous is  viviparus, meaning to bring forth alive. Humans are viviparous animals as well. Characteristics of Viviparity Viviparous animals invest lots of time in the development and care of the young. In the case of whales, although dead whales have been found with multiple fetuses, mothers usually give birth to just one calf. Seals usually have one pup at a time.  This is in contrast to some other marine animals like crabs or fish, which may produce thousands or even millions of young, but the young are usually broadcast out into the ocean where there is relatively little chance of survival. So, while the time and energy investment in viviparous animals is great, their young have a strong chance of survival. The Use of Symbolism in Nathaniel Hawthorne's Rappaccini's Daughter Nathaniel Hawthorne's Rappaccini's Daughter is perhaps the most complex and difficult of all Hawthornes short stories, but also the greatest. Nathaniel Hawthorne as a poet, has been characterized as a man of low emotional pressure who adopted throughout his entire life the role of an observer. Food irradiation has the longest history, more than 40 years, of scientific research and testing of any food technology before approval. Research has been comprehensive, and has included wholesomeness, toxicological, and microbiological evaluation. Worldwide, 38 countries permit irradiation of food, and more than 28 billion lb of food is irradiated annually in Europe. It is important to note that food irradiation has a pretty remarkable list of national and international endorsements: ADA, American Council on Science and Health, American Medical Association, Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, International Atomic Energy Agency, Institute of Food Technologists, Scientific Committee of the European Union, United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), and the World Health Organization (WHO). Although the US food supply has achieved a high level of safety, microbiological hazards exist. Because foods may contain pathogens, mishandling, including improper cooking, can result in food-born illness. Irradiation has been identified as one solution that enhances food safety through the reduction of potential pathogens and has been recommended as part of a comprehensive program to enhance food safety. However, food irradiation does not replace proper food handling. So the handling of foods processed by irradiation should be governed by the same food safety precautions as all other foods. Food irradiation cannot enhance the quality of a food that is not fresh, or prevent contamination that occurs after irradiation during storage or preparation. But, treating foods with the irradiation of gamma rays offers benefits to consumers, retailers, and food manufacturers such as improved microbiological quality, replacement of chemical treatments, and extended shelf life. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are not notably affected by irradiation. But certain vitamins are sensitive to food irradiation. Yet, nutrient losses can be minimized by irradiating food in an oxygen-free environment or in a frozen state. According to the Ames, Iowa Council for Agriculture Science and Technology Task Force Report No. 115, consumers consistently rate irradiated fruit as equal or better than non-irradiated fruits in appearance, freshness, and taste. So in 1966, Friedan joined other women in founding the National Organization for Women (NOW). Friedan served as its first president for three years. In 1967, the first NOW convention took on the Equal Rights Amendment and abortion, though NOW viewed the abortion issue as highly controversial and focused more on political and employment equality. In 1969, Friedan helped found the National Conference for the Repeal of Abortion Laws to focus more on the abortion issue; this organization changed its name after the Roe v. Wade decision to become the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL). In that same year, she stepped down as NOW president. Today the government’s opinions of freedom share some of the same characteristics as the definition, but their opinions have too many limitations to actually classify our country as completely free. The First Amendment of the Constitution was written to guarantee one’s freedom of religion. This amendment prohibits congress from setting up or supporting an official church. In addition, it forbids congress from passing laws limiting worship. The First Amendment states that congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Although this may be true, this does not mean that all religious practices must be allowed. In fact, congress prohibits multitudinous amounts of religious worship. Religious ceremonies of cults, worshiping the devil in prison, and acts similar to the Klu Klux Klan are exceptionally forbidden. For example, Mormons believed that it was a man’s duty to have more than one wife; still the Supreme Court ruled that Mormons had to obey the laws forbidding that practice. The main focus of this essay are the many struggles Douglass came upon through slavery and strategies on how he overcome them. In times of severe emotional and physical abuse, most people turn to their families for support. Frederick Douglass was subjected to emotional and physical abuse. Slaves were property of the slave owner, so, the slaves were continuously traded and families were constantly broken up. Having few blood ties to turn to, Douglass had to find other means of creating a family that would help him deal with the daily issues of slavery. Slavery destroyed any attempt towards having a normal family but he tried to create a family in different ways in order to survive his own conditions. Since his family was torn apart disrupted by slavery at very early age he had to form a family.
